Compliments
New baby compliments
Half the recipients are sleep-deprived. The good ones cut through. Specific, warm, no advice.
New-baby compliments are tricky because half the people receiving them are sleep-deprived to the point of hallucination. The good ones cut through the fog: they're specific, they're warm, and they don't pile on advice. Just love.

How to write a baby card
- Compliment the parents, not just the baby. Everyone tells them the baby is cute. Almost nobody tells them they're doing a good job already.
- Don't pile on advice. New parents have heard everything. The card that doesn't tell them what to do is the one they'll actually re-read.
- Skip "sleep when the baby sleeps." They've heard it 47 times. Don't be the 48th.
- Acknowledge the hard part. "This is going to be hard and you're going to be great at it" lands harder than "everything will be perfect." Be honest. They're already exhausted.
- If you can: send food, not flowers. Compliments paired with action — a meal, a Doordash gift card, an offer to walk the dog — are the highest-leverage gift you can give a new parent.
The "lucky baby" frame
One of the strongest new-baby compliment frames: framing it as luck for the BABY to have these parents, not luck for the parents to have the baby. "Your baby is so lucky to have you" is the rare angle that compliments the parents directly. New parents need to hear they're going to be good at this. Tell them.
