Compliments for dads are harder than for moms — not because you love him less, but because most dads aren't culturally fluent in receiving them. He'll probably deflect. That doesn't mean the compliment didn't land. Send it anyway.
Compliments about what he taught you
You taught me how to fix things and I think about that every time something breaks. Also every time something doesn't break.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5I'm proud of you. That's not a thing kids say to their dads enough. Saying it.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Thanks for being the kind of dad I can call for any reason. That's the rare thing.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5How to deliver a dad compliment
- Don't expect him to receive it gracefully. He'll deflect, change the subject, make a joke. That doesn't mean it didn't land. He's processing. Give him the room.
- Written > spoken. A text or a card lets him sit with it instead of having to respond on the spot.
- Reference a specific moment. Dads tend to remember actions, not vibes. "I appreciate everything" hits less than "I remember the time you [specific thing]."
- Compliment him to other people too. Tell your kids about him. Tell your spouse. Tell your friends. Compliments that travel back to him through other people are particularly powerful.
- Don't wait for him to deserve it. Most dads don't think they deserve compliments. Override.
The "I want my kids to know you" frame
If you have or want kids: telling your dad you want them to know him the way you know him is a top-five compliment frame. It tells him he's worth passing on, not just enduring. Most dads have never been told this.
