How to actually do this
- Say them out loud. Internal self-talk runs too fast. Saying a self-compliment out loud — even quietly — forces your brain to process it. The medium matters.
- Write them down. Keep a note on your phone of times you did something well. Re-read it when you're underselling yourself. External evidence beats internal doubt.
- Use second person. "I did a good job today" gets deflected easily. "You did a good job today" — written or said to yourself — works better, weirdly. Same data, different angle.
- Don't apologize for them. Self-compliments don't need to be qualified. "I did a good job — well, kind of" cancels itself. Drop the qualifier.
- Pair them with evidence. "I'm doing well" is vague. "I'm doing well — I [specific thing]" is grounded. Evidence beats affirmation.
The "if a friend had done this" frame
The most reliable self-compliment frame: imagine a friend told you they did the thing you just did. What would you say to them? Say that to yourself instead. The friend-frame bypasses your usual self-deflection because you'd never deflect a friend's accomplishment that hard.
