Compliments
Genuine compliments
What makes a compliment feel real: specificity, no agenda, said when it's not expected, in your actual voice.
"Genuine" is the word people search when they're worried the compliments they're finding online are too generic, performative, or AI-generated. The fix is the same one that's been the fix this whole guide: specificity. Generic compliments feel fake. Specific compliments feel real.
Below: 20 compliments that pass the "could a stranger have said this" test. They couldn't.
For someone you actually know well
The way you remember things people tell you in passing. I told you about [specific person] in March and you asked about them in October. That's not normal. That's love in action.

What makes a compliment genuine
- Specificity, not intensity. "You're THE BEST!!!" feels performative. "I think about how you handled [specific thing] all the time" feels real. Volume isn't sincerity.
- It costs something to say. Genuine compliments often acknowledge something the speaker hadn't said before. There's a small "I should have said this sooner" undertone.
- No agenda. Genuine compliments don't lead anywhere. They don't ask for a return compliment. They don't tee up a request. They land and stop.
- Said when it's not expected. Birthday compliments are scripted. Random-Tuesday compliments are real. The timing is part of the sincerity.
- It sounds like you. The most genuine compliments use the writer's actual vocabulary. If you don't normally say "effervescent," don't start now. Use your real voice.
The "I should have said this sooner" frame
The most genuine compliments often start with the acknowledgment that they're overdue. "I should have said this years ago" or "I've been meaning to tell you" signals sincerity. The compliment lands harder because it's framed as honest, not performative.
