Yearbook compliments are unique — they get re-read in 10, 20, 30 years. The person you're writing for will eventually find that yearbook in a box and read your message as an adult. Write something worth re-reading.
For a close friend
Best friend I made in high school. Hard to fake. Lucky.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Glad I met you. Whatever happens after this — keep being you.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5You made these four years actually worth showing up for.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5If we're still texting in 10 years, we did it right.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Best in the year. Documented. Future me will agree.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5For an acquaintance / casual friend
Always glad to see you in the hallway. Stay you.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5You're one of the people I'll remember from this year specifically.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Whatever comes next for you, I'm rooting for it.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Class is better with you in it. Putting it on record.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5For someone you had a crush on
Probably should have said this sooner: you're great.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Glad I knew you in this chapter. Hope our paths cross again.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5If we end up at the same college, I'm not playing it cool.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5For a teacher
Best teacher I had this year. Whatever you're paying you, it's not enough.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Thank you for actually showing up to teach instead of just showing up. I noticed the difference.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5If I'm anything in five years, some of it will be from you. Thank you.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5For a teammate
Best teammate this season. Trust me, I had time to think about it on the bench.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Whoever you play with next is going to love you. Lucky them.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5You made practice tolerable. That's not a small statement.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5For a senior signing a younger student's yearbook
You're going to do great in your last few years here. Don't let anyone tell you different.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Glad I overlapped with you. Make these years count.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Future-you will be glad past-you was paying attention. Pay attention.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Hype Level 5Yearbook rules
- Write something they'll be glad to re-read at 30. "HAGS" (Have A Great Summer) is fine for the casual signers. The close-friend ones should be readable in 2046.
- Use their name. Yearbook messages addressed to "you" read generic. Addressing them by name makes it feel like you actually wrote to them specifically.
- No inside jokes that won't survive. Inside jokes are great in the moment. Years later, you won't remember what "remember the cafeteria thing 🤣🤣" was about. Reference real moments by name.
- Sign it. Yearbook messages without a signature are confusing 10 years later. Sign your full name.
- Don't be afraid to be sincere. Most yearbook signers go for jokes. The sincere ones get re-read more.
