- Specifics matter. "Great teacher" is forgettable. "The way you explained [specific topic]" gets remembered.
- Send it to the principal too. Compliments that go to the teacher AND their boss are 10x as powerful. Principals get complaints all day. They almost never get compliments about specific teachers. Be the exception.
- Don't wait until end-of-year. Mid-year compliments hit harder because they're unexpected. The end-of-year card is expected.
- Be specific about impact on the student. "My child loves your class" tells them their effort matters. That's the gift.
- Hand-written. Email is fine. A hand-written note will be kept for years.
The CC-the-principal move
One of the most impactful things parents can do: send a written compliment to a teacher AND CC their principal. It goes in the teacher's file. It comes up at performance reviews. It can mean a raise, a promotion, or just protection in tough years. It takes 90 seconds and matters disproportionately.
