Compliments
Wedding compliments
By role: couple, toast, card, parents, wedding party. The wedding-specific compliments that actually land.
Wedding compliments span a wide territory — for the couple, in toasts, for the parents of the couple, for the wedding party, on the card you sign at the reception. Each requires a slightly different register. Below: 20 wedding compliments for every role you might be filling.
For the couple
You two have built something most of us are still hoping for. Watching it is its own gift.

If I had to write a definition of love I'd just describe how you two are with each other.

How to write a wedding compliment that lands
- Reference how they are TOGETHER, not just as individuals. "You're great" works for either of them. "The way you two look at each other" is the wedding-specific compliment that lands.
- Skip the "finally" jokes. "About time you got married" or "we thought this day would never come" is a bad joke wrapped in a backhanded compliment. Skip.
- For toasts: be specific, be brief, be sober (until after). The best wedding toasts are under 4 minutes, reference 1-2 specific stories, and end on the couple. Not on you. Not on jokes about marriage. On them.
- Hand-write the card. The wedding card is one of the few cards couples actually save. They go in a box. They come out at anniversaries. Make it worth the box.
The "we're all witnesses" frame
One of the strongest wedding-compliment frames for toasts: the idea that the guests are witnesses to the relationship that already exists. "We're not making you a couple today. We're just officially noticing what's been true for years." It elevates the wedding from event to acknowledgment.
