Compliments for your brother
Bury the real compliment under casual disrespect. He'll absorb it. 18 examples in brother-dialect.
Brother compliments have to be delivered carefully. Most brothers aren't going to receive a sincere "you're amazing" without making a face. The move: bury the real compliment under a layer of casual disrespect. He'll absorb it. Be patient.

How to brother a brother
- Wrap the compliment in a joke. "You're not the worst" is, somehow, a compliment in brother-dialect. Pure earnestness will make him short-circuit.
- Compliment him to other people first. He'll hear about it through the grapevine. That's actually how brother compliments often work best.
- Big-moment compliments can be sincere. Wedding speech, graduation, becoming a dad — these are the moments where the layers come off. Use those.
- Don't expect a "thank you." He'll grunt or change the subject. The compliment still landed. He'll remember it longer than he'll admit.
The grandpa frame
One of the strongest brother-compliments: noticing he's becoming the kind of person your grandpa or dad would be proud of. Reference an older male family member he respects. "Grandpa would be proud of how you handled that." Works without him having to receive it as praise from you.
