- Reference the year that just happened. A compliment that acknowledges what they actually did this past year hits harder than a generic "you're great" compliment.
- Don't joke about their age. "Over the hill" jokes are mid. Skip.
- Make it specific to them. "Happy birthday to one of the kindest people I know" is fine. "Happy birthday to the person who [specific thing only they do]" is better.
